Replacement Bearing Checklist: Beyond Matching Dimensions
A bearing that fits the same shaft and housing is only a dimensional candidate. A defensible replacement record must also preserve the complete identity, execution, operating conditions, interfaces, and unresolved unknowns.
A failed bearing often reaches a sourcing desk as three measurements and a photograph. Bore, outside diameter, and width are useful, but they do not describe the full bearing execution or the application that the replacement must serve. The practical task is to turn a loose request into a reviewable comparison.
Dimensions define an interface, not the whole application
ISO 492:2023 specifies dimensional and geometrical characteristics and tolerance values for radial rolling-bearing interfaces. That scope is important, but it is narrower than an application approval. The same nominal boundary dimensions do not by themselves establish bearing type, internal design, clearance, cage, seals, precision, lubrication, load capacity, speed suitability, or mounting requirements.
Start by recording where the bearing sits in the machine and what it supports. Identify the shaft or roller, the locating and non-locating positions, any paired arrangement, the housing, the sealing system, and the lubrication supply. Preserve the position reference so that two visually similar bearings from different locations are not merged into one request.
Copy the complete designation exactly
The Schaeffler Technical Pocket Guide explains that a bearing designation can identify type, dimensions, tolerances, internal clearance, and other important features. It separates the basic designation from prefixes and suffixes, while warning that prefix and suffix use is not standardized in every case and can vary by manufacturer.
The SKF Rolling Bearings catalogue groups suffix information across internal design, external design such as seals, cage design, materials and heat treatment, tolerance and clearance, matched sets, stabilization, lubrication, and other variants. Dropping a suffix can therefore remove a functional part of the specification.
Photograph every visible face before cleaning or removal changes the evidence. Transcribe spaces, slashes, hyphens, prefixes, suffixes, country marks, batch codes, and any paired-set markings exactly. Keep the original image beside the typed record.
Separate the basic designation from the execution
A base number may identify a bearing series and bore code, while the remaining characters describe a specific execution. The exact meaning must come from the named manufacturer's current or archived technical documentation. Do not assume that the same suffix letters mean the same thing across manufacturers.
For separable bearings, keep the rings and roller assembly tied to their original position and record. Schaeffler notes that interchangeability of individual parts from separable bearings cannot always be ensured even when the parts have the same origin. A request for one ring or component therefore needs manufacturer and set-specific evidence.
Internal clearance is a selection input
ISO 5753-1:2009 specifies radial internal-clearance values for defined radial bearing types. Clearance class is not a generic quality grade. The required operating clearance depends on the bearing arrangement and can be affected by shaft and housing fits, temperature differences, load, and speed.
Record the existing clearance suffix and any documented fit or temperature condition. If either is unknown, keep it unknown until drawings, manufacturer data, or qualified engineering review resolves it. Do not treat a greater-clearance variant as an automatic upgrade.
Rebuild the operating-condition record
SKF's bearing selection process begins with performance and operating conditions and highlights load, speed, temperature, lubricant, and lubricant cleanliness. It then considers bearing type and arrangement, size, lubrication, operating temperature and speed, interfaces, execution, sealing, mounting, and dismounting.
For a replacement request, record the best available evidence for radial and axial loading, speed range, starts and stops, reversals, shock or vibration, operating and ambient temperature, contamination, water or process-fluid exposure, cleaning method, and observed lubrication condition. Historical operator reports should be labeled as observations unless logs or measurements confirm them.
Compare the shaft, housing, and lubrication system
A bearing works inside an arrangement. Capture shaft and housing seat dimensions and condition, shoulders, fillets, sleeves, locknuts, spacers, preload or endplay method, seal arrangement, grease or oil supply, relubrication provisions, and the intended mounting and dismounting method. Use the machine drawing and bearing manufacturer's data as the comparison authority where available.
SKF lists shaft and housing fits, clearance class, cage material and guidance, dimensional stability, precision, sealing, mounting method, and maintenance among the factors that belong in a bearing specification. A supplier cross-reference is useful only after these application fields are connected to the proposed product record.
What must remain visible before approval
Old and proposed manufacturer, complete designation, revision or catalog date, markings, and source document.
Bore, outside diameter, width, chamfers, ring features, shoulders, fillets, and available installation envelope.
Bearing type and internal design, clearance, tolerance, cage, seals or shields, materials, heat treatment, stabilization, and matched-set status.
Load direction and range, speed, temperature, vibration, contamination, lubricant, and duty cycle.
Shaft and housing fits, locating arrangement, preload or endplay, seals, lubrication path, mounting, and dismounting.
Matched with evidence, different but reviewed, unresolved, or not applicable, with a named reviewer and date.
Keep failure evidence separate from identity evidence
Discoloration, damaged seals, cage damage, contamination, wear, looseness, noise reports, or lubrication condition can help a qualified specialist investigate why the bearing failed. They do not independently reveal the original complete specification. Preserve failure observations and photographs without allowing them to overwrite the identity record.
Maintenance inspection and removal also involve hazardous energy and stored energy. The OSHA control-of-hazardous-energy standard addresses unexpected energization, startup, and energy release during servicing. This article does not provide an isolation, lifting, disassembly, mounting, lubrication, alignment, or restart procedure; those tasks require the machine's instructions and qualified site controls.

Collect this before asking for an equivalent
- Record the machine, assembly, shaft, bearing position, and locating function.
- Photograph every marking and transcribe the complete manufacturer designation exactly.
- Attach the manufacturer data sheet, drawing, or catalog page that decodes the designation.
- Record bore, outside diameter, width, chamfers, ring features, and interface geometry as evidence, not as the whole specification.
- Identify bearing type, internal design, clearance, tolerance, cage, seals or shields, materials, stabilization, and matched-set status.
- Record shaft and housing fits, shoulders, sleeves, locknuts, spacers, preload or endplay, and seal arrangement.
- Describe load direction and range, speed, temperature, duty cycle, vibration, contamination, and moisture exposure.
- Identify lubricant, supply method, relubrication record, and any observed contamination or lubricant change.
- Compare the old and proposed bearings field by field, preserving every difference and unknown.
- Require named technical approval before ordering and separate qualified installation and restart checks afterward.
What this checklist does not prove
This record does not establish that any proposed bearing is compatible with a specific machine. It does not calculate bearing life, fits, operating clearance, preload, lubrication interval, mounting force, temperature limits, shaft or housing repair, or restart conditions. Those decisions depend on the exact bearing, machine arrangement, operating evidence, and qualified engineering review.

Frequently asked questions
Do matching bore, outside diameter, and width prove bearing compatibility?
No. Those dimensions describe part of the mechanical interface. The complete designation, bearing design, tolerance, internal clearance, seals, cage, lubrication, fits, loads, speed, temperature, mounting, and machine arrangement can still differ.
Can a cross-reference table approve a substitute bearing?
A cross-reference can identify a candidate for review, but it does not establish application compatibility by itself. Confirm the full old and proposed designations and compare manufacturer data against the installed operating conditions and interfaces.
Is a C3 bearing always an upgrade from normal clearance?
No. C3 identifies a greater-than-normal internal-clearance class for bearing types covered by that convention. Whether it is appropriate depends on fits, temperature differences, speed, load, and the intended operating clearance.
What if the bearing marking is unreadable?
Record the identity as unknown. Preserve photographs, machine and housing references, drawings, purchase or maintenance records, and qualified measurements. Do not reconstruct a designation from dimensions alone.
